UUCOC InterGenerational Activities

What is an InterGenerational Worship Service?

A service where multiple generations and families share in the worship hour.

InterGenerational services can be intriguing, moving, memorable times of spiritual growth for adults and children alike, as they build trusting relationships, practice community ethics and values and create a safe, familial space in which all feel they belong.

Why do we have InterGenerational Worship Services?

  • To include children in the life of the church as a method of teaching community ethics and values.

  • To allow busy families a chance to spend meaningful time with their children and to encourage continued conversation and exploration outside of the worship hour.

  • To encourage interaction, storytelling and the building of trust between older and younger members of our church community.

  • To provide a means of introducing new members into the congregation and providing opportunities for ministers and church members to mentor younger members.

  • To give younger members experience participating in the unique UU liturgy, so they can understand our rituals, values and norms within worship.

  • To allow experiences where adult church members can reconcile experiences they had as children.

  • To give all members a place where they feel safe and that they belong!

What is the philosophy behind having InterGenerational Services?

InterGenerational Services are rooted in the idea that gathering as a community to tell stories to one another has for centuries been the primary way villages have passed down information about their world view, spirituality, heritage, traditions, rituals, decision-making, morals, group norms, values and critical thinking skills.
